Egyptian-German artist Susan Hefuna makes her curatorial debut with Kairotic, bringing together London-based Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum and American video art pioneer Gary Hill along with New York-based designer Karim Rashid to produce work in relation to the city of Cairo. Kairotic is an ancient Greek word that means "the right moment" or "the opportune" Likewise, a second meaning is a reference to the art of weaving; this is the "the critical time" when a weaver must draw the yarn trough a momentarily open gap.

Putting the two meanings together, one might understand ekairos; to refer to a passing instant and, finally, a crucial step in the creative process. Given such a premise, artists have been invited to work in the city in the fall, returning in the winter to produce site-specific work born of those initial investigations. A final catalogue, marked by a documentation of the final work as well as a series of interviews surrounding the process, will be published following the exhibition.

Founded in 1998, the Townhouse Gallery, is one of the Middle East regions leading spaces for the arts. Townhouse provides a platform for creative inquiry across disciplines, supporting artistic work in diverse media. The gallery offers a regular programme of curated exhibitions, along with a film and performance seriesَas well as various international artistsي residencies. Annual events at the Townhouse include the PhotoCairo festival as well as the Open Studio Project, an international program that brings together roughly twenty artists from around the world to produce work in the heart of Cairo.
