Masterpieces of African American Art

Paintings and sculpture by the best and most well known black American artists in the U.S. are in Masterpieces of African American Art: An African American Perspective at M. Hanks Gallery, 3008 Main Street (between Pier and Marine), Santa Monica, CA, January 18 to April 1, 2006.

A special fund raising reception will be held Saturday, January 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. The beneficiary is the James Moody Jazz Scholarship Endowment. The legendary saxophonist will be present. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m., and by appointment.

This exhibit also celebrates Black History Month and Women's History Month and includes several special events where artists and art historians talk about art and poets read their poetry.

Artwork by Robert S. Duncanson, Meta Fuller, Palmer Hayden, Walter Williams, Charles Ethan Porter, Keinyo White, Elizabeth Catlett, Augusta Savage, David Driskell, Phoebe Beasley, William Pajaud, Richard Mayhew, Varnette Honeywood, Lois M. Jones and Charles Alston is included in the show and covers over 150 years of creativity, with the earliest executed in 1851 and the latest in 2005.

The James Moody Jazz Scholarship Endowment was established by the jazz great to help indigent jazz music students pay for tuition and musical instruments.
