Gilles Balmet is a young French artist who graduated from the Ecole Superieure d'art in Grenoble in 2003. The works he presents for his solo show One Shot by at Nuke gallery make an echo with his contribution to Nuke magazine, and therefore plays with the double function of the space (both a gallery and an office for the magazine).

The works were inspired by the test of Rorschach, throughout a research on its shape, leading to new potentialities. The artist has chosen to cover the gallery's window with an exclusive work entitled Window, which was cut out of a sticker designed out of the pattern of a picture published in the magazine's second issue (out on October 20th 2005). Inside the gallery, an installation called Archives is set inside the blocks of a bookshelf. The sculptures, cut out from plastic binders, are more than a variation on the Rorschach theme; they question the concepts of the filing and the classification of works of art. Finally, the painting, which is part of the series, Untitled (Rorschach 2005) proposes a reflection on how the repeating symmetrical order of a visual pattern acts as the organizing principle of chaotic elements.

Born in 1979, Gilles Balmet comes from Grenoble. After spending a year at the Cite Internationale des Arts, he decided to settle in Paris. His works (videos, paintings, sculptures and drawings) have already been shown in many cultural institutions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon in 2004 for the Rendez-vous exhibition, at the Frac Champagne Ardenne in 2005 for the Jeunisme exhibition, and at the gallery of l'Ecole Superieure d'Art et de Design in Amiens for his solo show Digital Garden. More recently, the young artist showed a video Aikido at the FID in Marseille which was also part of the video program at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in December 2005. Gilles Balmet was also invited to the international video art festival (FIAV) in 2005 in Barcelona, and will show his work at the Kunsthalle in Halle, Germany in February 2006.
