Earthly Creatures

Lman Gallery, Los Angeles

Margaret Adachi’s elaborate cow sculptures and expressive sketches explore consumerism, the eat-or-be-eaten life and death cycle we are in. Asuka Ohsawa presents a new series of her character studies, which are witty, representational, and sometimes mythical. Sylvia Tan’s exquisitely rendered ‘objects’ begin to take on lives of their own and embody our shapes and desires.

LMAN gallery is pleased to announce a group exhibition of drawings and sculptures by Margaret Adachi, Asuka Ohsawa, and Sylvia Tan entitled Earthly Creatures. The exhibition opens on Saturday, January 21st, with a reception from 6 until 9 p.m., and closes on February 25th.

The time to celebrate Chinese New Year of the Dog is fast approaching. We feel it is appropriate to complement this festive occasion with an event which has a lighter subject and humorous undertone. All three artists in the exhibition communicate to us through their lively and sometimes cartoon-like characters in their own ‘artistic languages’. The show also touches upon some of the gentle responses to our human instinct, which we may take for granted sometimes. With the renewed interest in pop and comic art, we want to showcase the different approaches of these three talented individuals.

Margaret Adachi’s elaborate cow sculptures and expressive sketches explore consumerism, the eat-or-be-eaten life and death cycle we are in. The cows labor to greater productivity while using their feminine wiles to be ‘liked’ and thus survive to come back yet another day.

Asuka Ohsawa is always interested in the narratives of traditional Japanese screen painting scenes which are populated with her own cartoon-like caricatures inspired by Japanese woodcut prints, pop culture icons, personal friends and people she comes across in mass media. This is a new series of her character studies, which are witty, representational, and sometimes mythical.

Sylvia Tan’s exquisitely rendered ‘objects’ begin to take on lives of their own and embody our shapes and desires. Their spirits and reflections of us captivate as we observe them.

Opening: January 21, 6.00-9.00 pm
