An exhibit, presented by Herve' Loevenbruck, which includes pieces of art going from historic modern to the most actual contemporary (Virginie Barre', Alain Sechas). "Est-ce bien de l'art?" ("Is it reaSaint-Cyprienlly art?") is an exhibit presented by Herve' Loevenbruck, which includes pieces of art going from historic modern to the most actual contemporary (Virginie Barre', Alain Se'chas). The pieces all have something in common and that is, to give rise to the question, does this really fall into an artistic catagory?
The general public as well as the so-called knowledgeable public always fears a practical joke when faced with a particularly provocative work of art. Which of us has not feared a trick or a trap in these cases. This same reaction existed when people were first confronted with Impressionists, with Duchamp or with Jeff Koons. Nevertheless, as time goes on, certain of the most baffling types of pieces are accepted ( such as Piero Manzoni's "The box of artists' s----", which is presented here) and are now sanctified and considered major elements of art history. How does this eventual public acceptance happen? The exhibit "Est-ce bien de l'art" wishes to underline and to pose this question by distributing to each visitor, a free question and answer notebook in which he will be asked to mark down his responses to Elisabeth Couturier's questions regarding each work of art.
As one advances throughout the exhibit, the pieces perhaps shock just as much, but somehow become more familiar because of the thought process imposed. One can then love or hate, but for a reason. The falsehood would be, to not be ruffled or taken aback.
To ask very frankly, like Ben, "Is it really art?" means putting all the cards on the table and at the end, forgetting the question and retaining only the emotions one has felt upon visiting this most unusual exhibit.
