Internal Injuries

Marella Arte Contemporanea, Milano

Works by 14 chinese young artists: videos, photos, paintings and installations. The theme of the exhibition is inspired, or better it's in opposition with the idea that "art should show things that are positive or beautiful". Shu Yang, curator of the show, thinks that this statement is similar to the approach of the painting style of the chinese Cultural Revolution.

Marella Gallery is pleased to announce the group show "Internal Injuries" during which it will host in Milan the works of 14 chinese young artists. It is the second step of a project started in June in China at Marella Gallery Beijing and curated by Shu Yang.

The theme of the exhibition is inspired, or better it's in opposition with the idea that "art should show things that are positive or beautiful". Shu Yang thinks that this statement is tipycal of the "Nazi Art" and similar to the approach of the "red bright and shining, lofty, big and perfect" painting style of the chinese Cultural Revolution. He adfirms that many artists may be adept at presenting a false picture of peace and prosperity, but with a bit of earnest examination, it's usually easy to find the cracks in their works.

Now China is changing too fast and the crazy developing of the big cities is causing traumatic reactions. For this reason, when we look at the work of contemporary Chinese artists, we often find more depressing subject matter.

Calling this exhibition"Internal Injuries" was based on the curator's feelings towards the videos, photos, paintings and installations of these artists. He considers the artists a group of people who are very sensitive and receptive to their living environments. "When the three qualities of acute sensitivity, honestly facing up to reality and courage in expression are all present, works of art can become very valuable reference objects for society, and from them we can discover the true face of a society that has been covered up".
