Diaphans

Clytie Alexander “Diaphans" will be on exhibition at Bobbie Greenfield Gallery February 11 - March 25, 2006. The artist titled this newest body of work “Diaphans" because of their diaphanous quality. Included in the exhibition are 16 hole-punched works; 12 made of aluminum and 2 of Kozo paper. These colored planes hang several inches from the wall creating a shadow that is as much a part of the art piece as the physical surface. Alexander carefully chooses her colors ranging from cool blues to warm oranges. The color on the reverse of the piece is picked up by the shadow infusing it with color. Alexander plays with this effect by occasionally painting the back of an aluminum piece a different color than the face.

Clytie Alexander’s life experiences provide a palette of information from which she draws inspiration. As a teenager she lived in Dacca, Bangladesh. The repetition of the drumbeat in classical Indian music and the patterns used in Indo-Muslim architecture, especially the intricately pierced walls called “jali", are early influences for the Diaphans. The works resonate the vastness of the Mohave Desert in Independence, California where Alexander lived and worked after moving from the Los Angeles area. Now located in New York City architecture is again a source of information. The patterns of windows in the skyscrapers seen from her studio windows mirror the vertical perforated works.

Bobbie Greenfield Gallery first exhibited Clytie Alexander’s work in the group exhibition “Off the Wall" in 2005 and is excited to be presenting this solo exhibition.
