Views of the Garden: With a new twist on Chinese landscape traditions, Jacci Den Hartog's wall-mounted and freestanding sculptural vistas capture the mist rising from a waterfall or the flow of a gentle mountain stream. Since a trip to China, where she studied gardens that date from the 13th and 14th centuries, Los Angeles-based artist Den Hartog has translated the intangible qualities of nature into intimate landscapes designed from polyurethane, plaster and resin.
Den Hartog builds topographies that she feels capture the fluidity of the sky ... the stability of the mountains with manufactured materials that nevertheless behave in ways reminiscent of nature's materials. The jagged rock formations, vaporous atmospheres and rushing waterfalls typically portrayed two-dimensionally by painters East and West become intricate dioramas in Den Hartog's work. Her show at the Contemporary Arts Center includes 10 large-scale sculptures.
