The title of the exhibition, "American Night", refers to the cinema effect used in second half of 20th century which provided opportunity to realise night scenes during the day light. Maciejuk made series of paintings referring to the plans of popular animated films for children, which were left by all the characters.
American Night
Born in 1965 and a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, Maciejuk
gained recognition as a painter of partially abstract works inspired by games
with perspective and elements of renaissance architecture. His later works
refer to the world of signs, symbols and logotypes. And just when everybody
thought they had his painting well classified, he surprised the public with a
new series of works portraying characters from popular TV series for children.
Kitsch, over-sweet Teddy-bears in his paintings acquire new rather scary
features.
The title of the exhibition refers to the cinema effect used in second half of
20th century which provided opportunity to realise night scenes during the day
light. But deep shadows and colour of the sky made cautious viewer aware of
this technical trick. Robert Maciejuk made series of paintings referring to
the plans of popular animated films for children, which were left by all the
characters. Maciejuk changes all theirs elements: trees, buildings etc in a
manner similar to use of different lances like in the "American night"
technique. Those interferences lead to pointillist or even abstract paintings.
It is a kind of American night in Polish painting.
