David Risley Gallery is pleased to present the 1st solo exhibition of work
by Mexican artist Jorge Sosa outside of Mexico.
His assemblages and videos
have their routes in the places, people, objects and music found on the
streets of Mexico City. He chooses objects for their diverse cultural,
economic and political associations. These associations are brought
together, causing the object's initial status to become paralyzed, to
collide, to melt or to disintegrate.
Market objects, streetwise interchange and exchange gather together to
highlight and embody ideological and critical postures. Sosa¹s work examines
the relationships between the state and the black economy of the street
market, the local and the global, the individual and society through
reflecting his own reality.
Specific personal items and more general objects are combined in the
sculptures. His Grandmother¹s jacket is wrapped around a drum containing a
ball of silver foil. A bright yellow vinyl disco record his Father played
obsessively when Sosa was a child is cut into sections and suspended like a
mobile.
Through his work he presents his individual situation, his position within
Mexican society and how that relates to the wider global context.
Jorge Sosa is curator of ExTeresa Arte Actual Museum, Mexico City. He
studied architecture at Universidad National Auto'noma de Mexico and Visual
Arts at ŒLa Esmeralda, National School for Painting, Sculpture and
Engraving.
