Come un alchimista, Jane Mulfinger trasforma il 'banale' e il 'mondano' in 'straordinario'. Vecchi vestiti, scarpe, fotografie, ma anche aneddoti e cliché vengono rivisitati nell'immaginazione di Mulfinger e presentati come segni di una realtà più profonda e imbarazzante.
Nella sua seconda personale alla Galleria Carbone, l1artista californiana presenterà una serie di incisioni su pannelli in vetro trasparente raffiguranti nuvole e piume - che saranno realizzati durante il suo soggiorno a Torino prima della mostra - dal titolo No Image No Matter (letteralmenete "Nessuna immagine, nessuna materia", che però in inglese ha un doppio significato, perché "no matter" è anche un modo per dire 'non c'è problema'). Accompagneranno le incisioni su vetro una scultura composta di nuvole in porcellana e piccolissime morbide piume da piumino, e l'installazione The Drunkard Forwarned & tne Swearer Caution'd, il cui titolo ("L'ubriacone ammonito e il bestemmiatore diffidato") fa riferimento a un dibattito sulla morale risalente ai primi giorni della storia americana del XVIII secolo. Intorno a un cuscino argentato a forma di nuvola, su cui gli spettatori possono arrampicarsi e tanto grande da occupare un'intera stanza, 14 incisioni su argento basate su "I vizi e le virtù" di Giotto sono sospese nell'aria. Con il passare del tempo i vizi si ossideranno, mentre le virtù resteranno senza macchia.
Come molti artisti contemporanei, Jane Mulfinger ha sperimentato uno stile di vita nomadico che l'ha portata ad allontanersi dalla nativa California, trasferendosi prima a Berlino e poi a Londra, dove nel 1989 ha conseguito il Master of Fine Art al Royal College of Art. Attualmente vive tra Londra e Santa Barbara, dove insegna all'University of California. Fin dalla sua prima mostra, la Mulfinger ha esposto in luoghi rinomati quali la Mayor Gallery e il Camden Arts Center a Londra, il Southehampton Museum of Art, la Orchard Gallery a Derry e il Center for Contemporary Art di Glasgow.
La mostra sarà visibile nel sito a partire dal 25 gennaio.

Like an alchemist, Jane Mulfinger turns the mundane and banal into something extraordinary. Old clothes, shoes, snapshots, jokes and clichés are all somehow re-encountered in the light of Mulfinger's imagination and presented as signs of some deeper and perplexing reality.
In her second solo exhibition at the Galleria Carbone the Californian artist will show a series of etched glass panels featuring clouds and feathers titled No Image, No Matter, which will be created during her stay in Turin before the opening. Mulfinger will also show a sculpture in two parts: porcelain clouds and a pile of very fine down feathers; and the installation The Drunkard Forwarned and the Swearer Caution'd. The title for the work is taken from the title of an XVIII Century moral debate between town officials in early American history. Surrounding a huge, cloud-like silver pillow which can be mounted by the audience, 14 silver-plated etchings based on
Giotto1s Virtues and Vices float in air. With time, the vices will tarnish while the virtues remain unblemished.
Like many contemporary artists, Jane Mulfinger has led a somewhat nomadic lifestyle that has taken her afield from her native California. She traveled to Berlin and then to London, where she earned a Master of Fine Art with Distinction from the Royal College of Art in 1989. Since her thesis exhibition, Mulfinger has exhibited in well-established sites such as the Mayor Gallery and the Camden Arts Center in London; the Southhampton Museum of Art; Orchard Gallery, Derry; the Center for Contemporary Art in Glasgow.
She maintains her London base while teaching in the Department of Art Studio, at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
The exhibition will be on the website from January 25.
