Beetles & Sprouts
Beetles and Sprouts, a collection of new ceramic artwork by Jim Keville opens March 18th, 2006 at L2kontemporary Gallery. A variety of exotic, colorful porcelain beetles traverse the gallery walls and pedestals. Their horns, spiky legs and oversized scale offer a creepiness that contrasts with their dazzling metallic and bright colored glazes simultaneously drawing one closer and keeping a safe distance.
The beetles, inspired by Scarabs, share the gallery space with abstract organic sprouts. The colorfully glazed sprouts grow out of amorphous bases that cling to the edges and corners of pedestals. An unusual relationship between sculpture and pedestal, these elements dynamically interact with one another creating tension and unease. Like serpents, these sprouts grow upward out of their textured host toward the pedestal center. These new ceramics connote a variety references and are an exploration in form, gesture, color and texture.
Like the beetles, the sprouts are organic and natural. The bright glazes draw one in while the forms give pause for hesitation. Together, these beetles and sprouts offer a playful, whimsical experience that may also be a bit unsettling.
