Wolfgang Tillmans

Museum of Contemporary Art MCA, Chicago

Tillmans presents his photographs in highly distinctive installations in which ink-jet prints are affixed in deliberate, yet seemingly random, arrangements on the walls in order to create a variety of physical and emotional relationships with the viewer based on placement and scale. The vast range of his images thus becomes an ongoing “palette" of sorts, which he uses repeatedly as a way to constantly rearrange and reinterpret his photographic vision.

comunicato stampa

The MCA is co-organizing the first retrospective exhibition of the German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans in the United States with the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. One of the most important and distinctive artists to emerge in the 1990s, his work is internationally recognized for its richly evocative and stylishly intimate reflection on the often overlooked objects and moments in everyday life. Much of his work concentrates on deceptively casual and unforced views of friends and acquaintances, catching them off-guard and at their most unguardedly “human."

The vast range of his images thus becomes an ongoing “palette" of sorts, which he uses repeatedly as a way to constantly rearrange and reinterpret his photographic vision. He has also frequently made discrete series of works that touch upon particular themes such as images of soldiers or views from the Concorde.

Tillmans’ presentation at the MCA features photographic and video works drawn from the entirety of his career. The exhibition is co-curated by Pamela Alper Associate Curator Dominic Molon and Russell Ferguson, Chief Curator, Hammer Museum, University of California, Los Angeles.

Catherine Opie: Chicago (American Cities)

May 20 - October 15, 2006

During the past seven years, Los Angeles-based photographer Catherine Opie has undertaken a project in which she has systematically photographed key elements in several major American cities. Steeped in the documentary tradition and seeking to uncover aspects of each city’s identity and sense of community in her penetrating photographs, this series focuses on Chicago -- the American “city of architecture." This new body of work examines the spectacular way the city’s architectural monuments are nocturnally lit, complemented by a group of views of Lake Michigan at different seasons during the year. While the architectural photographs are horizontally-formatted in black and white, Opie’s views of the lakefront are large-format color images so as to better reveal its changing light qualities and moods. These images present a nuanced vision of key aspects of Chicago’s identity in a revelatory and unexpected way that reflects an intermingled formal, conceptual, and documentary emphasis. This project is curated by James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Programs Elizabeth Smith, who also curated Opie’s first solo museum exhibition in 1997.

12 x 12: New Artists/New Work

This series of exhibitions features the work of emerging Chicago-based artists opening each month at the MCA's First Fridays events. While the MCA regularly integrates the work of young artists into its exhibition program, this project will provide a forum for the many talented artists in Chicago who are at a crucial juncture in the development of their work. The fast-paced nature of the series is intended to open up the program- and the vision- of the MCA to provide a fresh, up-to-the-minute view of new and unfamiliar developments in the studios of Chicago. This series is organized by the Curatorial department of the MCA.

Sponsored by: Additional support provided in part by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs City Arts Program IV. The Chicago Park District generously supports MCA programs.
