Jennie Smith. New Drawings + Nicholas Woods. New Work
During the month of June, Rena Bransten Gallery (77 Geary Street, San Francisco, CA
94108) will present new works by Jennie Smith and Nicholas Woods, both in their
first US exhibitions.
A variety of creatures populate Jennie Smith's delicately rendered graphite and
watercolor drawings. Shells, mammals and birds, both real and imagined, appear
alone, airborne or piled together in fantastically stratified ecosystems.
Expressing ideas of shelter and survival Smith's drawings suggest narratives of
collective action at the same time as calling for ecological awareness and social
change.
Smith was born in 1981 in San Francisco, California where she currently lives and
works and received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. This is
Smith's first solo exhibition. Her previous projects include the Bulletin Board at
the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2006); her work is
also featured in this year's Whitney Biennial, New York where it has received great
acclaim.
Nicholas Woods' watercolors and paintings of otherwise idyllic Mediterranean
landscapes are distinguished as much by their unlikely animal protagonists as the
sense of unease that pervades them. Occasionally the threat implicit in these
depictions of privileged existences¨Dlike the watchful presence of a sinister hooded
figure reminiscent of Goya's Inquisitors¨Derupts into violence. Inviting
associations of a sequel to Animal Farm, here the revolutionary leaders have fled
the farm for an expatriate life of ease and Woods' political critique is tempered
by a humorous enjoyment of the ridiculousness of the scenario.
Woods was born in 1971, in Lynchburg, Virginia, and has recently relocated to Los
Angeles, California from Spain.
