The show engages with the fictions, fantasies, utopias, and dystopian nightmares of outer space in the context of scientific developments that gathered momentum during the paranoia of the Cold War.
10th Planet
The 10th planet: a common point of departure in Science Fiction, a place where
the fears and expectations of what lies beyond the known confines of space
could be projected. Far enough to evoke the exotic unknown on the fringes of
the Solar System, yet close enough to elicit a sense of foreboding menace.
Planet 2003 UB313, recently discovered and claimed as the 10th planet in the
Solar System, shifts from the realm of Science Fiction to scientific fact,
pushing the frontier deeper into space. The show engages with the fictions,
fantasies, utopias, and dystopian nightmares of outer space in the context of
scientific developments that gathered momentum during the paranoia of the Cold
War.
Influences include diverse sources of pop culture: the sci-fi send-up of
Futurama, the pristine Modernist chic of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek, the
high-camp of Barbarella. While other work responds directly to scientific
advances and discoveries made by Nasa and the Astronomical community during
the last fifty years. 10th Planet takes place in a 15,000 sq.ft space across 2 floors
where Damien Hirst held his exhibition Modern Medicine.
