Nobuyoshi Araki. Tokyo 1969-1972, 1973
Nobuyoshi Araki (*1940) from Japan, one of the most provocative photographers of our day, has been taking pictures since the late 1960's. He does this daily and obsessively. His works include not only erotic photographs that have brought him international fame but also pictures of flowers, charming features of everyday life, photos of architecture as well as personal images of himself and of his wife Yoko, who died at an early age. Araki claims the world for himself through the medium of photography, a >>claim<< that has since been published in almost 400 books.
The work >>Tokyo Sexteen<<, consisting of 28 diptychs, formed the original basis for the 1973 book >>Tokyo<< which appeared as a small edition but has now long been out of print. In this early work with its strong conceptual focus Araki juxtaposes pairs of pictures that capture street scenes of everyday life in Tokyo, presenting them in such a way as to evoke erotic fantasies. Passers-by taken at busy junctions and city squares are brought together in the same picture - largely by accident. Only occasionally do they gaze into the camera of the photographer. Juxtaposed to these everyday scenes are other pictures presenting the recurring theme of the woman staring at the viewer in erotically laden fantasies.
Al Taylor - Drawings
Al Taylor, who died young in 1999, was one of the most individual sculptors and draughtsmen of his generation in America. The almost playful ease and subtle humour that characterised his drawings made Al Taylor an >>artist for artists<< par excellence. The exhibition shows retrospectively groups of works from his estate and private collections and also a few sculptural objects. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
Tribute to Pit. Ellen Auberbach on her 100th anniversary
To celebrate the anniversary of the 100th birthday of the German-American photographer Ellen Auerbach (1906-2004) the Pinakothek der Moderne is showing the documentary film >>ringl and pit<< by the American director Juan Mandelbaum. In 1929, together with Grete Stern (1904-1999), Ellen Auerbach founded the Berlin photo studio ringl+pit. It soon rose to fame and won acclaim as the atelier for avantgarde advertisements and portraits. At the height of their success both women were forced to leave Germany in 1933. Ellen Auerbach emigrated via Palestine to New York, where she lived to her death in 2004. This one-hour-long film was made in 1995 with the collaboration of the two women photographers and traces in great detail their unusual lives. It is a unique document about two exceptional women, their 70-year friendship and the cultural and political events that so significantly shaped the 20th century. Parallel to the showing of the film the museum will be displaying 15 photographs of Ellen Auerbach taken between 1929 and 1955.
