In its inaugural year as a booth fair, Scope New York shattered all previous sales and attendance records for the ever-growing field of alternative art fairs, bringing in more than $7.5 million in total sales at conservative estimates, and attracting more than 14,000 visitors. When the doors opened at noon on March 10, collectors mobbed the 30,000 sq. foot former warehouse on Eleventh Avenue, buying out the inventory from at least three galleries within the first two hours, with Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation alone purchasing a total of 30 works.

“The astounding success of Scope New York 2006 is proof positive Scope’s unique approach of supporting museum quality programming, artist awards and curator grants, alongside international galleries gives a real time view of the contemporary art world found nowhere else" said Scope’s president Alexis Hubshman. “The cream of the international art world showed up, took part, and returned multiple times." said Hubshman.

For four straight days, from opening day until the fair closed on March 13, Scope buzzed with palpable excitement, bringing together top collectors, curators, and museum directors. Collectors Dean Valentine and David Alan Grier co-mingled with critics Roberta Smith and Jerry Saltz in a high-energy, fast-paced environment blending established and emerging galleries, museum-quality programming, and special projects. Renowned collectors Beth Rudin de Woody, Rosa de la Cruz and Hubert Neumann perused Scope’s select group of 80 contemporary, international galleries, including such established “invitational" galleries as Jack Shainman Gallery (New York); Kustera Tilton (New York); Samson Projects (Boston); Staubkohler gallery (Switzerland); and STUX Gallery (New York). New York’s hottest art fair also included such emerging “breeder" galleries as SEVENTEEN (London); red dot project (Miami); Keith Talent (London); and Nice and Fit Gallery (Berlin), with all galleries reporting brisk sales.

“The energy of Scope was electric," said gallerist Jack Shainman. “There is now a viable alternative to the Armory, and one that’s a lot more fun," he said. Added Ricco Maresca: "Scope New York was as close to a feeding frenzy as I have ever seen in my entire life."

Amongst the visitors were Robert Storr and Thelma Golden, head curator of The Studio Museum, who checked out the many programs including Perpetual Art Machine. PAM, a feature of curator Lee Well’s Cinema-scope area, is an interactive multimedia experience examining more than 500 videos from 300 international new media artists. Collectors Michael and Susan Hort perused the work of emerging artists in the curated exhibition “Winner Take All," while MoMA director Glenn Lowry and Brooklyn Museum director Arnold Lehman took in the Rhizome.org special project, “All Systems Go!" Curators Berta Sichel of Spain’s Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and the Guggenheim’s Manuel de Santeren viewed performances by Lilah Freedland and Babatunde Bablola on the grassy hilltop stage, as Mera and Don Rubell checked out the work of featured artist Risa Puno.

This year, in addition to awarding several grants to emerging artists, as it has done the past four years, Scope New York 2006 introduced the Scope Collection. With a mandate to collect the best young artists represented by emerging galleries, the Scope Collection selected David Kennedy Cutler of Berlin’s Nice and Fit Gallery to create the Collection’s first piece.
