Creatures of Dreams
The lithographs Odilon Redon produced during the 1880s and 1890s contain some of his most haunting images. This new exhibition, on display at The New Art Gallery Walsall until the 10 September, brings together examples
of his work from the galleries own Garman Ryan Collection and from the British Museum.
Two prints of Odilon Redon’s from the 1890’s start this exploration of his work that was a major influence upon the Surrealist movement. Redon explores the amazing scientific discoveries of his time, such as the ‘monsters’, which could be seen under the microscope. His fascination of the unconscious mind, dreams and fantasies was well ahead of Freud’s 20th century psychoanalytical analysis and his creations of the unknown world such as ghosts, the supernatural and the afterlife produce unforgettable images of the seemingly unknowable.
Jo Digger, Collection Curator says ‘The works featured in this exhibition have been grouped together into themes, in order to highlight some of the contemporary issue and personal experiences which shaped Redon’s art. However, Redon himself preferred not to explain the meaning of his pictures - he wanted to stimulate the imagination of the viewer on how they were interpreted. Visitors are welcome to come along to a free talk by Henrietta Lockart on Sunday 9 July at 2pm and hear more about the extraordinary imagination of Odilon Redon and his ‘Creatures of Dreams’
