At the Johannes Stegmann Gallery at the University of the Free State in
Bloemfontein CRASH! BOOM! BANG! is an exhibition curated by Teresa Lizamore
from Artspace fine art gallery . johannesburg and which will run as three
exhibitions under one roof and form part of the Volksblad Art Festival at
Bloemfontein. The exhibition ends on 8 August.
CRASH! after recently successfully exhibited at Artspace in Johannesburg,
it was felt that this show now forming part of Crash! Boom! and Bang! should
be seen at the festival. The works on this show by well-known South African
artist Chris Diedericks, who recently acquired the 2006 Kanna visual prize
at the KKNK in Oudtshoorn as well as an Ampersand award, and Musha Neluheni,
new young black female graduate from Rhodes University, consist of
photography, linocuts and charcoal drawings.
Says Diedericks about his work: "I am an avid traveller; as well as an
explorer of people, places and images and recently embarked on a fifteen day
visit to Ghana in West Africa. My collaboration with Musha, and the title
'Crash', inspired me to document over five hundred photographic images of
'crash meetings' between myself and people/places/images in Accra, Cape
Coast and Elmina. "Neluheni says of the exhibition that "it's the sense of
touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people
bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We're always behind metal and
glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we deliberately crash into
each, just so we can feel something".
BOOM! with Sandra Hanekom from Piketberg in the Western Cape. Her works are
based on "all those pretty babies". Her paintings are visual stories, both
personal and personalized. The elongated format, 180 x 20 cm, emphasize the
sense of the narrative. They remind the viewer of rolls of film or of comic
strips. Says Hanekom about her works: "I have always selected concepts and
images that firstly please myself - reflect myself. Obsession with the
subject-matter for me is essential - obligatory. I have always adored THE
STORY". Hanekom, as a little girl, was always confronted with the need, not
the want, to be beautiful. What is the cost of pretty - of both having and
not having it - of being the icon and wanting to be the icon.
BANG! Lawrence Lemaoana, presently in Paris with a prize received at the
2006 ABSA Atelier Art competiton, is from Johannesburg. His background of
playing the game of rugby influences his work, looking closely at the
stereotypical masculine figure. For reasons such as the history of our
country, our social and economical positions in an ever changing world,
Lemaoana was forced to question his own identity as a young black man. His
realisaiton that the past always has a strong bearing on the future and that
in the deconstruction of one kind of masculinity another different one is
constructed, lead him to carefully select fabrics that create a sense of
irony in his work.
This use of material is an attempt to subvert popular
associations with the artist's subject matter. Lemaoana aims to deconstruct
the macho, masculine figure and construct his own figure. In his work
Lemaoana tries to shift the energy of a negative experience by making his
works colourful and rich. He moves between the real world and the super real
world where all is within his control. Hence, the construction of his alter
ego and this alter ego breaks boundaries in that he does what no man can do,
he can break the rules and regulations and he says that "all men are equal
but some are more equal than others" therefore playing with the complexities
of inferiority.
