Layla Curtis's work focuses on people's attempts to order the world through maps, charts, memory and journeying, amongst other means. Anna Barriball's work is a mixture of 2 and 3 dimensional works that, through her interactions with everyday objects look at the language between sculpture and drawing in a playful manner.

Layla Curtis

This exhibition has been developed in collaboration with VIVID, Birmingham. A new book on Curtis's work has been co-published by Locus+ and The New Art Gallery Walsall to coincide with the exhibition.

Layla Curtis's work focuses on people's attempts to order the world - often unsuccessfully - through maps, charts, memory and journeying, amongst other means. From early collaged road maps and tracings from atlases, her practice has expanded to include experiments with the internet and global positioning technology. This project is a collaboration with Vivid, Birmingham.

Layla Curtis will be in conversation with curator Emily Marsden in the galleries at 2pm on Saturday 12 August.

Anna Barriball
Anna Barriball's work is a mixture of 2 and 3 dimensional works that, through her interactions with everyday objects look at the language between sculpture and drawing in a playful manner.

The work combines simple, ephemeral acts alongside more labour intensive and time consuming techniques. This often reveals relationships and poetic qualities that are to be found in the most inert and mundane of everyday things. The substance and materiality is emphasised through the artist's search and process in making the work which results in a quiet concentration required by the viewer.

Anna Barriball will be in conversation in the galleries at 2pm on Saturday 26 August.

Matthew Murray
Over the last 5 years Birmingham photographer, Matthew Murray, has visited holiday resorts and theme parks on the East and West coast of America, India, Brazil and the traditional English seaside: the places where people go to relax, have fun, seek thrills and bring themselves happiness and enjoyment in the sun.

This exhibition looks at the different ways in which people choose to spend their leisure time: from the incredible to the ridiculous. The photographs reveal his interest in the cultural differences he observes on his travels, and reveals "that a little bit of sunshine makes people go a long way".
