From nature...

Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto

I decided that it was a good idea to organise an exhibition dedicated to the theme of nature, in the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, which is located in Serralves Park, a site of exceptional beauty. Nature and still-life are traditional themes in the history of art and have been addressed in a rich and wide variety of manners by representatives of different artistic trends. Over the last 40 years, many artists have created works where nature has been explored or even dissected, in one form or another.
The artists included within this exhibition, have already had their works exhibited in the Museum, either on an individual or collective basis - Roni Horn, Richard Long, Hamish Fulton, Lothar Baumgarten - together with others such as Fla'vio Pons from Brazil, Sigurdur Gudmunsson from Iceland, Fischli & Weiss from Switzerland, Joseph Beuys from Germany, Herman de Vries from Holland and Gilbert & George from Britain. Nature is a common theme in the work of some of these artists, while others only make occasional incursions into the universe of nature.
The approaches, methodologies and formats of the works on display - drawings, photographs, engravings, sequences of photocopies - are as diverse as nature itself. In order to re-establish the connection between artists' works and certain approaches towards natural spaces produced by artists, several photographs of works that have been specifically produced for Serralves Park will also be exhibited, by Angelo de Sousa, Alberto Carneiro, Maria Nordman and Richard Serra.

LUC TUYMANS
DUSK / PENUMBRA

“Dusk/Penumbra" contains less than 20 works carefully chosen to represent some of the main issues in Luc Tuymans’ oeuvre. These key works are connected to reference material taken from the artist’s personal archive: models he built as a starting point for paintings, objects, books, magazines and polaroids he used for his works, different films, and a slideshow on historic art. The basic idea of this show is to map Tuymans’ field of thinking through the use of objects, images and words. There are discoveries to be made in his early writings, and in his film-projects, where many of his basic concepts were developed. Passage through the rooms of the Casa de Serralves, where Tuymans has installed his second show in Porto since 1998, will provoke a wide range of associations, as do the loose items of source-material published to accompany the exhibition.
