Video, sound and a sculptural installation will create a playful atmosphere of site-specific comment and boudoir, playing with cliches of the couple in modern times. Borrowing the title "Iduna Nova“ from an insurance company widely known in Germany, the exhibition will also be an homage to Iduna, the goddess of youth and spring.
Iduna Nova
Alexander Heim and Nicole Wermers, both living in London, will show new works. For their first time exhibiting together, they’ve chosen the workspace- and library apartment of the independent curator and writer Anna-Catharina Gebbers.
Video, sound and a sculptural installation will create a playful atmosphere of site-specific comment and boudoir, playing with cliche's of the couple in modern times. Borrowing the title „Iduna Nova“ from an insurance company widely known in Germany, the exhibition will also be an homage to Iduna, the goddess of youth and spring.
Formally cool and elegant, involving both private views and references to public spaces, the exhibition will comment the intimate environment of the apartment, which epitomizes the continuous intertwining between private and public dimension.
Furthermore the peculiar location of the venue, marks several borders of different origin and predestines it for a privileged position for miscellaneous inquiries: The space is located between Bundestag, Brandenburger Tor and the museums and galleries in Berlin Mitte, near the old frontier between East and West Berlin, next to Friedrichstadtpalast and in the middle of the East Berlin theatre district. Friedrichstrabe also used to be the famous promenade of the Roaring Twenties, the entertainment spot of the metropolis. An opening night in the Apollo theatre was one of the most important society events. The Wintergarten - the quintessence of variete' - witnessed the birth of cinema with the world premie're of Max Skladanowskis “Theatre of Living Photographs".
In addition to that the exhibitions in this apartment always take place for only four hours. Hence exhibitions here are more salons or performances of exhibitions. They expose the extravagant, mannered quality of the current artworld, with its fleetingness, the crossing of art and capital, the clash of utopia and reality, the fear to miss something, and involve also the Berlin tradition of salons and apartment exhibitions.
Alexander Heim and Nicole Wermers have developed a sophisticated and offbeat transformation for items like the aboved mentioned and more.
Most recent exhibitions by Alexander Heim include Goldsmith Postgraduate Show 2006 (Visual Arts), Artists Show Art Film Night 2006, “Painting Ruins" at Afghan Foundation, Kabul, “The Addiciton" at Gagosian Gallery Berlin (2005). Most recent exhibitions by Nicole Wermers include “The Subversive Charm of the Bourgeoisie" at Van Abbemuseum (2006), “Around the World in Eighty Days" at ICA London (2006), Tate Triennial 2006.
