comunicato stampa

The National Galleries of Scotland are proud to present major exhibitions of works by Robert Mapplethorpe and Ron Mueck at this August’s Edinburgh Art Festival.

Ron Mueck is one of the most exciting sculptors working today. He shot to fame in Charles Saatchi’s Brit Art extravaganza Sensation at the Royal Academy, London in 1997, with Dead Dad - a poignant sculpture of his father’s small, naked corpse. His 4.5m crouching Boy also drew considerable acclaim when presented at the 2001 Venice Biennale.

This exhibition comprises the five recent works that were shown at Fondation Cartier in Paris last winter attracting 110,000 visitors (In Bed, Two Women, Mask III, Spooning Couple and Wild Man), as well as important earlier works (such as Man in a Boat, 2002) and a giant baby (A Girl, 2006) made especially for this exhibition and shown in Edinburgh for the very first time.

In 1996, Mueck's career turned to fine art when he made a sculpture of Pinocchio for the painter Paula Rego, his mother-in-law. The sculpture was noticed by Charles Saatchi, who, a year later, included Mueck in his Britart extravaganza Sensation at London's Royal Academy. His beautiful sculpture Dead Dad - an astonishingly lifelike (if half-size) sculpture of a male corpse lying on the floor - drew considerable attention.

In 2000, the National Gallery, London, invited him to become artist-in-residence. A year later, he presented the monumental, 25ft-high Boy at the 49th Venice Biennale (a work which had previously been on show at the Millennium Dome).

Ron Mueck was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1958. He started out as a puppet maker for Australian children's TV, and settled in London (via the United States) working for Jim Henson on Sesame Street and The Muppets and supervising the special effects for two feature films: Dreamchild (1985) and Labyrinth (1986). He still lives and works in London.

The National Gallery of Scotland Complex is Scotland’s second most-visited attraction, after Edinburgh Castle. It is made up of three interconnected buildings: the National Gallery of Scotland - home to a major part of Scotland’s sensational national collection of fine art; the Weston Link - with modern, friendly eating, drinking and shopping facilities; and the Royal Scottish Academy Building (RSA) - Scotland’s premier venue for international exhibitions.

The Ron Mueck exhibition is in the Upper Galleries of the RSA. Entry to the show is via the Princes Street Entrance (rather than the Weston Link). From 23 June - 3 September, there will be a major exhibition of Adam Elsheimer’s work in the Lower Galleries. His tiny paintings on copper are extraordinarily detailed - and this technical brilliance draws parallels with the work of Mueck. Why not see both shows with our See More, Save More ticket.
Opening Hours

Open daily, 10am-5pm.
