Night Thoughts
Figureworks is pleased to open this season with Matthew Greenway’s
latest oil paintings and works on paper.
This work focuses on life-altering, catastrophic events and
Matthew’s disruptive dreams surrounding them. Typical subjects
include floods, fires, and hurricanes, where displaced figures are
confronted with the power of nature. For Matthew, this work is a way
to purge and document intense events into a striking and approachable
format.
These unusual paintings are ironically romantic in nature as they are
presented in Matthew’s signature softened and contemplative way.
This is achieved through his formal painting technique using a muted
palette and balanced composition. In line with his previous series of
generational, familial interiors, these pieces are personal,
haunting, and historic in nature.
Related gouaches, wood blocks, and monotypes preceded the series and
are included in the exhibition. These pieces are not only studies
for the paintings but finely executed works on paper that explore
abstract shape, contrast, and design in a direct black and white format.
Matthew Greenway attended the National Academy of Design, Brooklyn
College, and New York Academy of Art, where he received his MFA. He
was awarded the Charles G. Shaw Memorial Award from Brooklyn College
and the Prince of Wales Fellowship from New York Academy of Art. He
is currently instructing at Philadelphia University and Fleisher Art
Memorial in Philadelphia.
