Photographs 1930 - 1970

Lee Miller (1907-1977) was ‘discovered’ by the Conde' Nast publishing house in 1927 and began her career as a fashion model for American Vogue. She posed for many great photographers of the day, including Edward Steichen (1879-1973) and George Hoyningen-Huene (1900-1968). However she very quickly became bored with life as a model and decided to move to Paris to learn photography from Man Ray. In 1929 she became his pupil, assistant, lover and muse. In 1940 she was taken on by Vogue in London as a freelance photographer, and from 1941 onwards she was the magazine’s war correspondent in France and Germany. Her photographs of the liberation of Paris and of Dachau concentration camp are some of the most powerful images of war from the 20th century.

The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg is showing photographs from this period in addition to works from the original London exhibition, which was exclusively devoted to Miller’s portraits. The exhibition has been organized by the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg based on an original exhibition organized by the National Portrait Gallery and the Lee Miller Archives.
