Julie Nord. Elsewhere. Simon Keenleyside. Endless coulored days. The gallery presents two shows of two contemporary young painters, the second one coming from Great Britain.
Julie Nord. Elsewhere.
MOGADISHNI CPH is proud to present the solo exhibition „ELSEWHERE“ by Danish
artist Julie Nord. The exhibition consists of entirely new works, partly
Nord’s well-known, accurately composed and detailed black/white drawings in
great scale, partly a number of coloured works, which are done more
“loosely" with watercolour. On top of this are a number of works, which
place themselves between the precise and the casual, the spontaneous and the
constructed, the drawn and the painted. Finally a black/white flash film
with “transformation drawings" in movement will be presented.
The works can be experienced individually but can also be seen in
continuation of each other as condensations of absurd and pent-up stories
filled with omens and premonitions. Certain characters, patterns or
background details are repeated - with smaller modifications - in each
drawing and in this way the works seem to merge into one another.
In total the drawings constitute a massive “else-where" - ´populated’ by
Dalmatatian-girls, Siamese robins, deformed silhouette children, black
smiley flowers, melted helicopters and blue squirrels. The real space, with
which we are familiar, is being erased and replaced by a dreamy universe
with its own sense of logic and deep roots in the mysterious ‘twilight zone’
between the innocent play of childhood and the seriousness of adulthood. In
Nord’s universe the well known and the un-known is turned upside down and
suddenly single-family houses, flowers, garden birds, smoke from chimneys
and light bulbs appear grotesque and menacing. Nord makes no secret of the
fact that her basis of inspiration comes from film stills and horror movies.
In her works the outrageous, the dystopic and the alarming are with complete
naturalness merged into the well-known, the beautiful and the aesthetic.
Julie Nord also gets her inspiration from the universe of Victorian
children’s books in which gloom and anxiety are amalgamated. This idiom is,
however, updated by Julie Nord who adds ‘elements’ from contemporary culture
such as gothic horror, cartoon aesthetics, tattoo art and abstract Rorschach
patterns. In the works by Julie Nord different worlds collide in a sweet
iconography spiced up with the brutal and the humorous.
On September 14th MOGADISHNI CPH is also proud to present two brand new
catalogue releases. One is TRINE BOESEN’s catalogue "Trine Boesen
Paintings", which contains works from 2004-2006, text by Kirse
Junge-Stevnsborg, manager of “Dunkers Kulturhus" and a conversation between
Trine Boesen and Uta Grosenick. The other release is a catalogue by BENNY
DROSCHER, which presents works from recent years along with a text by
Cecilie Hogsbro and eleven new poems by the author Claus Hoeck.
MOGADISHNI CPH welcomes everyone in the gallery and to the joined “grand
opening" of the entire Valby gallery area, which mid-September consists of
no less than five galleries. The event begins at 4 pm with opening speeches
by Bente Scavenius, journalist at “Borsen", Christian Gether, manager of
“Arken", Museum of contemporary art and Minister of Cultural Affairs Brian
Mikkelsen. The evening ends with a party at "Venners Hjem", Carl Jacobsens
Vej from 8 pm!

Simon Keenleyside. Endless coulored days.
MOGADISHNI CPH is proud to present the solo exhibition „ENDLESS COLOURED
DAYS“ by the British artist Simon Keenleyside. The exhibition consists of
brand new paintings inspired by the landscape around Essex where the artist
grew up and currently lives with his family. The works are thus “coloured"
by a nostalgic keynote but due to the vehemently psychedelic, unsentimental
palette of Keenleyside they never seem melancholic. The landscapes depicted
are most often the marginal sites on the periphery of suburban culture,
which for decades have functioned as refuge and ‘playground’ for the
children from the outlying districts. Filled with historical remaining
effects in the form of bunkers from the Second World War and abandoned
warehouses the places have a lot of atmosphere and stimulate the
imagination.
By returning to the woodlands and marshlands of his youth Keenleyside allows
past and present to merge into on the one hand a subdued and contemplative
space and on the other an out-of-control and unruly picturesque space. The
strange beauty of the deserted landscapes is not only exquisite and
seductive but also contains elements of anxiety and desire. Apart from the
layers of references the works thus bears the impress of strong,
psychological suggestive levels. It is almost impossible to escape from an
atmosphere of secrets and mystery.
Keenleyside often works on several paintings at once, resulting in a kind of
cross-pollination in which colour or scrapes of excess paint is transferred
from one canvas to another. This technical freedom stresses the same kind of
unrestrained-ness that can be found in the motives themselves. The romantic,
imaginative settings which unite the artist’s colourful, vivid recollections
with both art historical references to British landscape painting and
contemporary music culture and children’s literature entice the viewer in a
magical way and create a space filled with colour to get lost in or flee
into. Keenleyside’s impasto way of painting makes the sceneries highly
present. The texture becomes a landscape - and matter and motive become one.
Keenleyside creates an artistic universe, which is both recognizable and
unreal - a fascinating landscape for reflection. The painted territories are
perhaps absurd, dark and cosmic - but always appealing.
