Ruth Addinall
United Kingdom

I am interested in the mundanity of our everyday existence and the ways in which we transform reality through the rich workings of our inner lives. However banal their activity, I would like my figures to convey a sense of engagement in what they are doing, thinking or feeling. My urge to create, however, is driven largely by the visual and I am very much caught up in what Max Beckmann referred to as the "fantasy palace of art", the world of images and artifice. The stillness of many of my images reflects my fascination with sculptural form, the way light creates mass. I am also drawn to what is static as a means of reducing and concentrating time in order to capture a moment.

April Bending
Cayman Islands

Moving to Grand Cayman in 2001 with her husband her artwork was strongly influenced by these vastly different surroundings. She began painting realistic impressions of day-to-day sights. These included roosters, parrots, butterflies etc around which she painted playful festive borders filled with images of Caymanian interest, such as hibiscus, turtles, lizards and conch shells. This border, running around the outer edge of each piece, in effect was a painted story. The devastation of Hurricane Ivan in 2004 affected her deeply. Her style changed once again. Rather than capturing the visual images of Cayman, she went back to her roots in abstraction, this time with subtle figurative references evoking a variety of emotions. In these new paintings, images are revealed through loose layers of gestural abstract strokes. The overall effect is an ambiguity that allows the viewer to participate by bringing a personal history with which to interpret the piece.

Martin Miller
United States

I have always been moved by the way some abstract paintings transmute forms, colors, and textures into something otherworldly and even sublime. Seeking the same effect in photography, which preserves something of the concrete "reality" of the subject, I began experimenting with digital colorization of my B&W images. During this period of experimentation and rediscovery I realized that both my color and B&W pictures were really probing various traits unique to humankind. I have organized my work according to broad topics that I consider important to humankind’s understanding of itself. There may be some overlap in these topics and the risk that the meaning of individual images may be limited by placement in a given category. My hope is that more will be gained than lost.

Mathieu Weemaels
Belgium

Mathieu Weemaels is generally inspired of what surrounds it directly: an object in its workshop, a mirror which reflects the light of the life, a jacket hung with a nail, the invisible presence of the artist in this magic space. Working mainly with the pastel of his own composition, this talented inhabitant of Brussels marks his work by a significant writing and vibrating images.

Todd Williamson
United States

Every person associates colors with ideas or beliefs. Some people feel colors and yet others see colors when they hear music. Most people see a familiar landscape or figure in all color field paintings. I have attempted to make them feel emotions while they safely file the images in a comfortable place.
