Subway Ghosts

Sartorial Contemporary Art is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings by James Jessop and the publication of a 20 page catalogue.

Jessop creates a fictional seventies graffiti wonderland inspired by period photos of the Bronx as well as pictures he has taken on his recent trips to New York.

Jessop came to prominence in the New Blood exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in 2004. Recent shows include 'Warning the Monster is Loose', Rockwell Gallery, London 2005 and 'Fame' James Jessop & Stella Vine, This Way Up Gallery, London 2005.

Cheech Wizard recuperating new histories…

‘‘It was a #6 train yard on a Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1980. There were no trains blocking the view of the 3rd lane from the street. I could see the toys watching me through the fence. Finally after 4 hours of painting the ‘Hand of Doom’ was finished.’’ Seen - ‘Da Bronx Bomber’.

Jessop takes us back in time to the late 70s early 80s New York subway graffiti artist’s era by paying homage to the heroes of that time and also the vibes. However this is not graffiti art on canvas; this is oil on canvas created to operate within the system. By focusing in on the documentation of the era, Jessop has afforded himself the liberty of placing himself within that history - his name alongside his idols and on the same train lines, as in ‘Hell Express’.

Jessop consequently redefines the image, exercises ownership and ascribes it new meaning as an identity of his own. By doing so he shows the workings of true inspiration, paying homage and respect to them, creating new vibrant and bold samples from existing sources. When Jessop paints, the figurative aspects are important, as are the marks made on the canvas with the brush revealing influences and inspirations, nodding to those who have inspired him whether they are Van Gogh, James Ensor or Seen - ‘Da Bronx Bomber’.
