We are delighted to invite you to the opening of the solo exhibition of Nicolas Chardon, an artist living in Paris, as part of our current programme 2006:
Chardon's works are about the concepts of rhythm, time and space. In his newest work for the 2yk Galerie he centres the motive of the chessboard.
At first sight, they appear simple and economic, and initiate promptly a discourse with the history of painting. Starting from classical works, he activates the principle of an essential construct in art without allegoric or symbolic, metaphoric media. His working method consists of the usage of already made materials, that transform, that is deform their motifs, when they get framed. Afterwards it gets developed carefully and picturesque, layer for layer. The result is a geometric painting, in which the forms escape classic straightness and criticise winking the belief in formalism.
The title of the exhibition - STEADY - and the homonymous works (pictures and mobiles) induce an idea of constancy, repetition and movement. That way the well known rocksteady with its fitful rhythm also comes up. The black and white chessboard became its figurehead and symbolised the fight against tensions between black and white people in the English society.
Nicolas Chardon invites you to a dialectic dance and to face a confrontation of repetition, difference volume and surface.
On the occasion of the exhibition the publication STEADY will be released.
