Alessandro Vicario

Officina Arte, Magliaso

A landscape found again. The topic and inspiration source of Landscapes of absence were the domestic interiors of Lalla Romano’s house in Milan. In this new work Vicario concentrates instead on places related to the writer’s childhood, and particularly on her home village, Demonte in the Stura Valley, in the Cuneo province.

A landscape found again. In Demonte and in the Stura Valley in the tracks of Lalla Romano

An exhibition curated by Antonio Ria

With A landscape found again. In Demonte and in the Stura Valley in the tracks of Lalla Romano, the Italian photographer Alessandro Vicario keeps following the tracks of the great woman writer who died in 2001. This new work is the ideal development of his former Landscapes of absence. In the tracks of Lalla Romano (issued by the Locarnese publisher ELR Edizioni Le Ricerche in 2004 and shown in different exhibitions, both in Switzerland and Italy), thus intentionally repeating part of its title. The topic and inspiration source of Landscapes of absence were the domestic interiors of Lalla Romano’s house in Milan. In this new work Vicario concentrates instead on places related to the writer’s childhood, and particularly on her home village, Demonte in the Stura Valley, in the Cuneo province: landscapes, atmospheres, colours that exerted a crucial influence in shaping Lalla Romano’s sensitiveness as a writer and a painter.

Once more, Alessandro Vicario’s photographs aren’t just documentary evidence - they create instead a natural poetic continuity with Lalla Romano’s writings.

The exhibition, one of the events promoted by the National Committee for the Celebrations of the Centenary of the Birth of Lalla Romano, instituted by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities with the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, is accompanied by a catalogue published by Weber & Weber (Torino), curated by Antonio Ria and including texts by the art and photography critic Gigliola Foschi, the literature expert Giovanni Tesio, the gallerist Flavia Zanetti and by Vicario himself. The connections between Lalla Romano’s writings and Vicario’s images are extensively examined in these contributions.

As Giovanni Tesio observes, “Vicario doesn’t look for actual correspondences, but for the more enigmatic way of affinities". And Gigliola Foschi adds: “Alessandro Vicario’s work brings alive a sort of mimetic interaction with Lalla Romano’s prose, a continuation of her poetics transfigured in visual terms".

The exhibition at the Officinaarte, the very first showing the results of this new research by Vicario, includes a selection of the 48 colour prints published in the catalogue and is completed by some of the photographs taken by the writer’s father, Roberto Romano at the beginning of the last century.
