Thrust Projects is pleased to present a two person exhibition of new paintings by Daniel Domig and video by Audry Liseron-Monfils that uses the human figure to explore such dichotomies as anonymity and individual identity and aloneness and the potential for interaction with others.
In each of Daniel Domig's contemplative paintings, a single unidentifiable figure floats in a shallow, stage like space and merges with mysteriously familiar environments, both organic and man-made. The lone figures are barely privileged over the "sets" they inhabit, appearing at once very prominent and about to vanish. Domig's paintings are vaguely and dreamily associative, evoking personal memories and visual and literary references.
In Audry Liseron-Monfils's video of his performance entitled My Favorite Swimming Pool , an anonymous figure, wearing a mask that covers its entire face, crawls blindly along the sidewalk on a busy New York City street. Blind and all but helpless, the figure must rely entirely on the aid of passerby, who become "active agents" in his performance. They cannot see who he is and he never speaks to them, yet it is these "active agents" on whom the course of the performance and the survival of the performer depends. Liserons-Monfils uses his performance as a broad metaphor for the danger and interdependence inherent in human life. A series of drawings and photographs will accompany the video presentation.
Daniel Domig , an American-Austrian, was born 1983 in Vancouver, Canada and raised in Salzburg, Austria. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he was featured in a solo exhibition entitled “Don’t ask for a name now, maybe you’ll find it later” at Thrust Projects in the fall of 2006. Upcoming solo exhibitions include Museum Engen, Germany and Galerie Karol Winiarczyk, Vienna. He currently lives and works in Vienna.
Audry Liseron-Monfils was born in the West Indies and raised in Brazil and French Guiana, and he is a graduate of École des Beaux-arts in Nantes, France. He has exhibited at Galerie Anton Weller in Paris, Gasworks, London, and Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris (L’ARC). He has recently completed successful residencies in Dallas and New Orleans, and on January 5th, 2006, he performed My Favorite Swimming Pool in Times Square, New York. Liseron-Monfils works in Lille, France and Leuven, Belgium.
