The Peter Blake Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibit of recent paintings by Donnie Molls and Alex Couwenberg.
Donnie Molls is a mixed-media artist based out of Los Angeles. His landscape paintings evoke the idea of serene isolation and quiet separation. Molls captures the essence of seclusion in his depictions of abandoned buildings and decayed architecture. The viewer is lured in by the subtle solitude, yet kept at a distance by the expansive, fluid space surrounding the structures.
When it comes to depicting the romance and emotional drama of physical isolation, nobody does it better than Donnie Molls. His mixed-media works successfully incorporate photography and painting. "Reservation," with its eerie light and grisaille palette, is nothing short of fascinating, and "Route 666" offers further evidence of his creativity and craftsmanship. -Daniella Walsh
Alex Couwenberg describes his recent paintings as a “product of my obsession over process. Applying paint to a surface and the experiences and techniques that occur in creating an image are the purest form of motivation. The inspiration for this body of work is my appreciation for paint and pin striping, and finish associated with hot rod and car culture, mid-century design, and a love of materials to name a few. These paintings diagram the process of paint application and the interpretation of how these influences manifest themselves in the form of color, shape, texture and space."
“Although this most current body of work is created and shown in various formats, scale, color, and design, the process involved and the pure act of paint application will be the common thread. With a respect and consciousness to the history of painting as well as staying true to my focus and inspiration, these paintings are an accurate representation of my contribution to the dialog of contemporary painting and the ideas that are important to me as and artist."
