Overdrive

Lucas Schoormans Gallery is pleased to present Overdrive, the first solo US exhibition of Thorsten Kirchhoff, opening October 26th 6-8 pm.

The exhibition is focused around an 8 min short film also titled Overdrive. The film and seven three-dimensional paintings are installed around a section of a dismantled ministerial office in the center of the gallery.

In a departure from his prior practice of using stills from existing films as a starting point for his paintings, Kirchhoff has created two paintings based on Overdrive, . These works frame and accompany the film, evoking the setting and atmosphere of the plot. The installation of film and paintings of Overdrive, create the focal point of this exhibition and the characters he created co-exist alongside the familiar references to titles, situations and characters of his favorite directors.

Overdrive, is a sci-fi version of Kafka's The Trial or a James Bond movie scripted by Camus, set in a world dominated by cars rather than people. In the film, an unexplainable illness brings Chang into contact with Dr Hoffmann and a mysterious organization, the Ministry for Health and Transport (MHT). Chang soon discovers the MHT is planning to create a hybrid car person, experimenting with Chang himself. With the help of a beautiful Chinese girl, Chang struggles desperately to escape, only to end up once again in the deadly hands of Hoffmann.

Thorsten Kirchhoff's work has always been at one with the world of cinema. More than simply a source of inspiration, cinema is the database from which he culls images. Rendering these images, which are fully lodged in public awareness, as paintings releases them from detachment and reveals their illusory nature. Kirchhoff's work explores some of cinema's most classic components, such as Eisenstein style editing, to bring out innovative elements that combine decontextualised stills with sounds, painted images, and real objects.
