Solo show

Left Coast Galleries is proud to present artist Chaz Guest in his highly anticipated West Coast Premier Exhibit. This exhibit will show from November 2, 2006 to November 30, 2006. The exhibit will begin with an Artist’s Reception on November 2, 2006, from 6 to 9p.m. at Left Coast Galleries, 12324 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City, CA, 91604. Complimentary Valet Parking will be provided.

Guest’s rare blend of raw talent and bold formal technique, coupled with his extensive knowledge and experience of kinetic motion explode onto the canvas in a visceral artistic experience that is quickly establishing him as an important artist in the figurative expressionist movement. Whether his subject matter follows the contemporary masters of jazz, the fluid movement of dance, or the stunning athleticism of legendary prize fighter, Mohammed Ali, there is no denying his works are as mammoth as the subjects he represents.

Guest’s journey as an artist is as diverse as his works themselves. He was born in New York State in the early sixties and received a deep spiritual training from his father who was a practicing gospel minister. The voice of Guest’s father resonates throughout his work, as does the influence of his love of movement, which first displayed itself when he trained as a gymnast. Guest successfully pursued his career in gymnastics, which led him to Southern Connecticut State University, where he studied kinesiology and earned a degree in graphic arts. Guest enjoyed the ultimate honor as an athlete when he successfully competed with the U.S. Olympic team.

Guest’s next evolution led him to Paris, where he left his indelible stamp on the world of haute couture fashion working for Dior, Lacroix, and Yves St. Laurent. It was this work in fashion which inspired Guest to experiment in painting, his most important medium thus far. It is through painting that the profound influences of Chaz’s life experience converged resulting in a body of work that has received the attention of both the artistic and political community. In 2000, Chaz went global when he was commissioned to paint a mural for the Sydney Olympics. He also traveled to Japan with Jazz great Kenny Garrett, where their experimental collaboration birthed some of Chaz’s most exciting work to date. From his portrait of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, which now graces the D.C. office of U.S. Senator Barack Obama, to the sensual paintings of notable Jazz legends, Chaz’s pieces are uniquely diverse in tone and composition.

As one of the most important emerging artists of his time, Chaz has already developed an impressive list of collectors. This list includes: Wall Street financier Hugh Quigley, Marcus Miller, Kenny Garrett, Victoria Rowell, Dennis Haysbert, Denzel and Pauletta Washington, Mattie and Michael Lawson, Faye and Robert Davidson, Stacia and Michael Washington, Bill and Brenda Galloway, Josh Lucas, John and Kimberly Emerson, Dr. Tod and Shelly Turner, Dr. Deborrah Hyde, Steve McKeever, Ron Sweeny, Naomi Campbell, and the renowned Bebe Winans.

The Left Coast Gallery exhibit will feature 10 pieces from the Cotton Series, which evolved out of Guest’s own desire to take his 94 year-old Grandmother back to her birthplace, a cotton plantation. It was cotton gathered on this trip which he took home to his studio and used as inspiration for the paintings. The show will also debut five paintings from the Dance Series, which has been one of the most popular series for the painter. It was a donated painting from this series which commanded $34,000 at the Center Dance Association auction. Left Coast Gallery will also feature five pieces from the acclaimed Jazz Series.
