Selected Works 1978 - 2001

An exhibition of sculpture by Victor Grippo will open on November 4th at Alexander and Bonin.

Victor Grippo (born Juni'n, Argentina, 1936; died Buenos Aires 2002) is widely considered to be amongst the main precursors of conceptual art in South America. His work combined organic materials and minerals (potatoes, roses, bread, lead, mercury, and plaster) with daily objects (tables, suitcases and ovens) to depict natural forms of energy within a framework of scientific knowledge and his own writing and poetry.

From the beginning, everyday objects, modified by certain variables, were central to his work. Included in this exhibition will be Analogia I, a wall-mounted cabinet with 40 potatoes interconnected by electrodes to represent the expansion of a human being’s consciousness when one connects with others. Vida, Muerte, Resurreccio'n, 1980 consists of five pairs of three-dimensional geometric forms. One set of the forms has been filled with dampened beans which inevitably expand and split their containers, representing the imposition of life’s force.

La comida del artista, 1991 is an installation with a half-open door leading to a table laid with food that is both significant for its poverty (burnt bread) and abundance (gold plated eggs).

Victor Grippo was the son of Italian immigrants to Argentina. He studied chemistry at the Universidad Nacional de la Plata and art at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes and had his first solo exhibition in 1966. In 1970 he joined the Grupo CAYC and began work on his series, Analogi'as, which explored the opposites such as art-science, nature-culture and real-artificial.

Victor Grippo’s installations and sculptures have been part of many group exhibitions: Grupo CAYC at the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro (1978), the biennials of Sao Paolo (1979, 1991, and 1998), Paris (1969), Havana (1991, 1994), Venice (1986), and Documenta 11, Kassel (2002). His work was the subject of retrospectives at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham and the Palace of Fine Arts, Brussels in 1995 and Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) in 2004. A survey of his work will open at the Camden Arts Centre, London on December 7th, 2006.
