Ramon de Soto / Caparros / Space, Time and the Viewer. Installations and New Media
Ramo'n de Soto
Centro Julio Gonzalez - Galeri'a 4
Until 07/01/2007
The sculptor Ramo'n de Soto (Valencia, 1942) has formed part of all the innovative trends and initiatives linked to modernity in the Valencian Community since the nineteen sixties. Among the most important of these, it is worth mentioning especially his participation in the foundation of the group Antes del Arte and his commitment to pedagogic renovation as a university professor. His sculptural work, largely based on the Constructivist tradition, has been present at events connected with aesthetic creation committed to research into languages, the struggle against Franco’s dictatorship and the transcendental testimonial character of art.
The exhibition of this artist held by the IVAM is a synthesis of each and every one of his creative periods. It comprises some eighty sculptures accompanied by the author’s drawings, sketches, constructive projects and didactic material, involving an in-depth review of his series Sistemas espaciales generadores de configuraciones, Prometeos, Torturados, La Madre Tierra, Rituales de la Muerte or Paisajes del Silencio.

Among the theoretical premises that configure modern art, design has been considered one of the media that have most efficaciously divulged the innovative character and the contributions of the most avant-garde trends and movements. Since the dawn of the 20th century, graphic design has been one of the cultural tools with the greatest influence because of its importance in social communication, contributing to the presence of avant-garde art in everyday life and reflecting the different stages of the evolution of aesthetics.
The peak of graphic design in Valencia occurred in the mid seventies when immersion in contemporaneity took place with the retrieval of a mentality open to international design. The number and quality of designers working in our Community are a token of the development reached by this discipline, and, through the organisation of monographic exhibitions, the aim is to show the new, imaginative production they make in the sphere of design and the new creative languages.
Space, Time and the Viewer. Installations and New Media in the IVAM Collection
Centro Julio Gonzalez - Galeri'a 7A (Abajo) y Galeri'a 7B (Arriba) y Galeri'a 3
This exhibition, which can be seen until 4 February 2007, includes a total of 55 installations and continues the exploration and documentation of the installations in the IVAM Collection. It also analyses the context in which the works were created and presented.
The show features a selection of the most representative installations and includes a documentary part to facilitate understanding of this discipline of contemporary art - a particularly ambiguous discipline which resists categorization. The exhibition does not attempt to provide fixed definitions of what an installation is, for there are hybrid works that may nevertheless cast light on the issues addressed by this project, in accordance with the intrinsic spirit of installation art, which is a way of creating art that considers the viewer and space as integral parts of the work, as its text and context. This show continues the series of exhibitions devoted to presenting the different areas of the IVAM Collection.
