A Good Body for Better Sanity

Il giorno 20 gennaio 2007 alle ore 17 verra' inaugurata la mostra di Ahmed Askalany, A Good Body for Better Sanity (Un Buon Corpo per una Salute Migliore). Verranno presentate alcune installazioni e dipinti recenti del giovane artista egiziano, nato nel 1978 in un villaggio nubiano nel sud del paese e trasferito al Cairo nel 1995. Sono lavori in resina, ceramica o foglie di palma intrecciate secondo una tecnica artigianale antica, usata da sempre nei villaggi per produrre canestri e oggetti “poveri", che eludono le prerogative auliche della scultura ma mantengono forme plastiche tradizionali.

Soggetti tipici sono animali oppure figure umane cui l’uso delle foglie intrecciate conferisce un aspetto imbalsamato, da mummie. Nei pezzi piu' recenti le figure sono dilatate fino a proporzioni del tutto innaturali, corpi grossi senza testa, scenette triviali o banali nate da illustrazione di proverbi, entita' interamente determinate da un loro gesto da un atto, da uno scarto di posizione o di equilibrio che le distingue dalle altre.

L’abilita' di Askalany e' pero' sempre quella di cogliere un attimo, un gesto, un atteggiamento sempre profondamente naturale e “vero" dei suoi soggetti e di metterlo in scena con una specie di candore e, qualche volta, di pungente ironia.

Askalany si e' imposto all’attenzione della critica locale vincendo il Premio per il Migliore Artista Giovane nella Cairo International Sculpture Biennale (1998) e in seguito il primo premio per la scultura al 10' Salon of Youth (1999). Nel 2001 ha partecipato ad un’importante mostra internazionale, Cairo Modern Art in Holland ad Amsterdam. Questa e' la sua prima personale in Italia.

La mostra, a cura di Martina Corgnati, sara' accompagnata da un catalogo in italiano e inglese.

Opening of the exhibition “Good Body for Better Sanity" by Ahmed Askalany, will take place on the 20th of January 2007 at 17.00 hr. On show some recent installations and paintings by this young Egyptian, who was born in 1978 in a Nubian village in the south of his country and moved to Cairo in 1995. The works are made out of resin, china or interlaced palm trees, based on an ancient craftsmen technique, which has always been used in villages to make basket and other “simple" objects which cannot be raised to the level of sculptures but nonetheless have their own traditional plastic shapes.

Typical subjects are animals or human figures which, because of the leaves used, have an embalmed look, like mummies. In the more recent pieces, the figures are expanded to unnatural proportions, there are huge headless bodies, trivial or vulgar little scenes made to illustrate proverbs, entities wholly characterised by one of their gestures or actions, by a swerving movement or imbalance which makes them different from the rest. Askalany is always very good at seizing a fleeting moment, a natural and extremely real gesture or expression of his characters and then staging with a sort of innocence and, sometimes, with biting irony.

Askalany claimed the attention of the local critics by winning the Best Young Artist Award at the Cairo International Sculpture Biennial Exhibition (1998) and the first prize for sculpture at the 10th Salon of Youth (1999). In 2001 he took part in a very important exhibition: Cairo Modern Art in Holland in Amsterdam. This is his first personal exhibition in Italy. The show, with catalogues in English and Italian, is under the care of Martina Corgnati and will be open until March 15th 2007 at the following hours: Monday - Saturday 10.00 - 13.00 / 14.00 - 19.30 Inaugurazione: 20 gennaio 2007 alle ore 17
