Metrov

Artamo Gallery, Santa Barbara

Metrov’s early work was praised for its graceful realism. His paintings express a unique combination of his previous styles in a manner, which some European critics call "Termite Art". There are also on exhibit some experimental art videos.

MetrovSpective

Coinciding with the 22nd Santa Barbara Film Festival internationally collected fine arts painter and experimental video artist Metrov — who also has a reputation as web designer, screenwriter, novelist, and filmmaker — exhibits at Artamo Gallery.

Controversial, unorthodox, rude, brilliant, confusing — these are just some of the words used to describe the art of Metrov. Metrov who grew up in the small ‘dairy town’ [as he likes to call it] of Ontario, California, honed his fine arts tools in New York City during the decade of the 1970’s. He shared lofts with film directors Abel Ferrara and Francis Delia, and lived down the block from Andy Warhol. It was the era of Club 54 and the Sex Pistols. During that time, he also traveled to Europe and studied in Rome, Italy. He recalls sobbing amidst a crowd of tourists as he stood looking up at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. “I’d been studying and copying Michelangelo drawings since I was three years old, and there I was seeing those works live for the first time. It was overwhelming."

Metrov has exhibited in New York, Rome, Los Angeles, and Sun Valley, Idaho. His work has been collected by foreign dignitaries, major art collectors and celebrities such as Mick Jagger, the late Margaux Hemingway, Bianca Jagger, Mel Brooks and Mr. Patterson Sims, former Curator of Painting at the Whitney Museum in New York.

Metrov’s early work was praised for its graceful realism. Later, his paintings became primitive, and for a while, he even experimented with total abstraction. His current exhibit at Artamo Gallery in Santa Barbara is a culmination of many years of artistic evolution. His paintings express a unique combination of his previous styles in a manner, which some European critics call ‘Termite Art’. Also on exhibit will be some experimental art videos.
