It is a pleasure to present the installation Other Ways by Alex Villar at Gallery Tommy Lund. It is his first solo exhibition in Denmark.
Alex Villar was born in Brazil and has been working and living in New
York for the last 12 years. He got his MFA from Hunter College in New
York and in1999/2000 he participated in the Whitney Independent Study
Program.
Villar's piece is a video installation that dwells on dead space and
time - this portion of the day when one lives between places. The
installation is comprised of a tubular structure wrapped in netting
material that houses a video projection. The structure functions as a
kind of provisional architecture. From the outside it refers to a
construction site - a site where work is ongoing. Once inside, the
visitor has to negotiate the interior space of the scaffolding
structure. A diagonal pipe leads the visitor to a narrow corner, which
connects his/her physical and visual experience.
All the scenes were shot in the subway in New York City, this privatized
portion of public space where the flow of people is thoroughly
regulated. But Alex’s concern with these spaces follows a contrary
orientation. He pursuits the spaces that exist on the edge of the
rational logic governing the interior design of the subway system, those
small pockets of incoherence and contradiction that can be accentuated.
Villar has been showing internationally since 1998. His last projects
include exhibitions at Galeria Arsenal in Bialystok/Poland, Joanna Kamm
Gallery in Berlin, New Art Center in Boston, Art Container in New York
and upcoming Lichthaus in Bremen.
