New Work
Cora Cohen’s project is marked by experimentation. Her
process encourages the accidental and it is subject to careful
editing. Investigation of materials and immediacy of touch are
key qualities that describe each work’s step-by-step
development.
Bold marks, repeated lines and lucent color formulate a truly
unique and densely layered language of abstraction. The
complexity of Cohen’s compositions is based on the
combination of minute detail and large expressive forms. In
unison, these aspects manifest as visual tour de force, which
seems inspired by both familiar organic forms and
otherworldly landscapes. While distinct associations depend
on the viewer’s conception and are by no means initiated by
the artist, Cohen’s work nevertheless opens itself to
individual interpretation. Through the lure of rich material
interactions and the subversion of Western painting’s spatial
traditions, Cohen’s work proves an easily accessible gateway
for any experiential journey.
Continuously challenging her medium, Cohen draws from a
vast array of elements, including powdered pigment, oil
paint, pastel, acrylic paint, resins, graphite, iron oxide,
copper, and enamel. She pushes these materials beyond the
limitations of their traditional capacity, often causing them to
distress and even collapse. In this context, Cohen
strategically anticipates monumental change: broken down
elements are fused into re-united constructions. The image,
first lost and then rebuilt, is at long last reborn. This cycle of
destruction and renewal is employed to create a shot at the
future without the baggage of the past.
Cora Cohen was born in New York City, where she resides
today. Her career spans almost four decades and her work has
been exhibited and collected extensively in the United States
and Europe. She is represented in New York by Jason McCoy
