Paul Bob Velick, “FireWorks / A studio fire installed”, (D-5 Gallery)
Curated by Pierre Picot & Francesco Siequerios
FireWorks is a multi-dimensional installation derived from the remains from the Santa Monica Studio fire of artist, Paul Bob Velick. The fire took place on December 10, 2006. The show will feature an inspired selection and survey of surviving works from over 500 collected paintings, drawings, collages on wood, texts and photographs that were in the studio during the fire. The work spans the years 1985 up to a few months before the fire in 2006.
The history and legacy of artist studio fires can be documented and has been known to include Norman Rockwell, Martin Puryear, Joe Goode, etc.
The emerging themes of the work focus on repeated facets and a captured acts pointing to, “My people, my town” Mr. Bob depicts frenetic everymen and women who appear near over the edge as they race across town [Los Angeles] in automatic frenzies to consume, drive, talk on phones, mate, declare and engage in neighborly & worldly disputes only to go home and do all over again the next day.
The mediums are mostly water-based materials applied onto papers, wood, canvass and other transient substrates perfect for documenting the fleeting nature of these people and this town. As an experience, the show will be a heartfelt meditation on the “Gel” of our days, the net effect of the ten thousand things that we are all here on Earth to do. The show will be a warm artifacts from the “Burn” as seen in black edges, yellowed papers and a Smokey fragrance oozing from the work itself.
Curated by Pierre Picot & Francesco Siequerios, who are both Los Angeles artists and co-creators of the three man art-team [with Paul Bob] known as the Diplomats. Their collaborative portraits are done simultaneously together on one piece of paper for adoring sitters who have 5 minutes to smile and then receive a masterpiece. Mr. Bob invited them to curate the show as a natural extension of their teamwork, and in the spirit of a meeting they were having hours earlier on the day of the fire.
Paul Bob Velick began his public art career as one half of the performance Art Team known as Bob & Bob in 1975. This Los Angeles based Art-Team created works and momentum that spanned ten years of performing, painting, recording, drawing, sculpting and renegade art acts in Beverly Hills, where their studio was located. Mr. Bob began working privately in 1986 when he moved to New York City. Returning to Santa Monica, he assumed the studio next to the Dark Bob and has been quietly creating an inventory of work spanning 22 years. Although 50% of his work was lost, the remaining works point to a world that may seem familiar, funny and frightening.

Robert Berman Gallery presents (figment), a group show curated by Jon Cournoyer and Ashley Lauren Saks, featuring dreamy landscapes and imaginative worlds created by emerging artists from 4 cities across the country.
New York based artist Erika Somogyi uses fluorescent watercolors to explore themes of love, hope, transition, and uncertainty. Moody and ambiguous scenes are formed with naturalistic explosions color that stimulate the imagination. Reeve Schumacher is an artist representing Miami, using fabric, paint, and stains of color, layered with drawings and photographs. Delving into the depths of the subconscious, Reeve's work often addresses themes of metamorphosis and fantasy. Marie-Claire Bozant, based out of Austin, Texas, uses acrylic on canvas, painting phantasmagoric portraits of faces that melt away in pools of uncertainty. Jeff Charbonneau & Eliza French are photographers from the Los Angeles area that have been collaborating together for the past 4 years. Their mysterious images are inspired by their personal dreams and visions, yet have a vague sense of familiarity that intrigues the viewer and leaves them wanting more.
Together, these artists provide a space and experience that will take you away from reality, into a (figment) of their imagination and your own. The show runs from February 17 – March 10 in Gallery C2 of Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica. Please join us for an opening reception on Saturday, February 17th, 2007 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in gallery C2. Music and drinks will be provided.
