Known for his genial portraits characterized by a deceptively simple style, Julian Opie, artist born in London in 1958, is nowadays really on the crest of the wave. His style, composed by thick black lines around coloured backgrounds, has become, in a short time, a distinction of his work.

The appreciation shown by the public is due to the familiarity with the advertising messages, with the world of the comic strips, of the graphic design and photography, to whom his work is closely related. Silkscreen, the method used by Opie to realize these works, is the sole medium that allows the artist to obtain such exact lines and such flat and saturated colours. His interest, when he looks to the human figure, is concentrated on the tension that exists between single individuals and multitude.

For this reason his portraits featured by means of the same sign (the eyes are two dots, the mouth and the eyebrows simple lines), seem to be all the same, and appear, to a more attentive look, incredibly different. Julian Opie has exhibited in all the world and boasts works in the most important public galleries, as Moma in New York, Tate Gallery of London, Stedelijik Museum of Amsterdam, National Museum of Art in Osaka .
