The Crane Arts Center, in association with Elizabeth Dee Gallery, is pleased to present in the Ice Box Project Space BIG ROOM NOW, an installation of sculptural work by Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch. The exhibition opens February 1 and runs through February 24, 2007. A reception for the artists will be held Saturday, February 3rd from 6-8pm.

The exhibition features a selection of new work by Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch, created since their relocation to Philadelphia in July 2006. Produced in tandem with Trecartin’s forthcoming as yet untitled new video (his first feature length film following the breakout sensation A Family Finds Entertainment, 2004), the sculptures are the result of a fluid yet orchestrated interaction between Trecartin and his collaborator Lizzie Fitch who work with an ensemble cast of artists including Rhett LaRue, Lindsay Beebe, Kenny Curran, Brian McKelligott, Ryan Lucero, and Taya Koschnick. To make the sculptures, the artists are directed or inspired to interpret topics and assignments based loosely upon story lines, mentalities, personalities, accents, props, and moods that originate from a complex narrative approach to art making. Trecartin and Fitch, acting as both makers and creative directors, offer conflicting information and instructions, which are then resolved by sculpturally animating materials, products, and props gathered during shopping excursions throughout the city.

The exhibition consists of nine expansive installations that function as and incorporate within them sets, platforms, objects, and figures. It’s Over- Be More Gay (2006) comprises a multicultural family captured in a moment inspired by play, in both a physical and theatrical sense. Two gay dads pose on a platform in front of their baby who holds a video camera, filming them. One father’s arms morph into airplane wings, while the other father’s body combines physical traits of both male and female gender.

This is Ryan Trecartin’s second exhibition in partnership with Elizabeth Dee Gallery, who presented his first solo exhibition, I Smell Pregnant, at QED in Los Angeles in 2006. His seminal video, A Family Finds Entertainment, was featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial, Day for Night. It has been exhibited at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Wisconsin; The Getty Center, Los Angeles; Vox Pouli Gallery, Philadelphia; and will be screened at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, in 2007. He will have a solo exhibition to premier his new video and sculptural work at Elizabeth Dee Gallery, New York in May 2007.
