A new exhibition space in Berlin. 'Peas' is a meditation on what we tell ourselves in order to be cool, to be functioning. In it, the artist videotapes her simple, non-verbal conversation with her anxiety-hijacked instincts and gut, visualized by a face drawn on her stomach.
Video installation 'Peas'
Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition space in Berlin. Susanne Vielmetter Berlin Projects is located at Holzmarktstrasse in Berlin Mitte, next to Carlier Gebauer Gallery and c/o Atle Gerhardsen. The inaugural exhibition features a new video installation by Wynne Greenwood.
Wynne Greenwood, who is also known for her performances as the three girl band “Tracy and the Plastics”, presents “Peas”, a new work created for this space. Drawing its name from old and re-done sayings like "eat your peas and carrots, mind your p´s and q´s, and imagine whirled peas", “Peas” is a meditation on what we tell ourselves in order to be cool, to be functioning. In it, Greenwood videotapes her simple, mostly non-verbal conversation with her anxiety-hijacked instincts and gut, visualized by a face drawn on her stomach. This visualization of the anxious gut extends into the physical space of the gallery as a flat painted cardboard body. The body becomes three-dimensional at the hip/uterus/vagina area and houses a video monitor playing a second video.
Wynne Greenwood is currently included in “Media Burn”, an exhibition at the Tate Modern, London, UK. Her work has been shown recently in solo exhibitions and performances at The Moore Space, Miami; at Participant, New York; at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Los Angeles; at the Hayward Gallery, London, UK; at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA; at Reena Spaulings Fine Arts, New York, and Foxy Productions, New York; and at The Kitchen, New York, curated by Debra Singer and Sacha Yanow.
