L'artista fotografa soprattutto oggetti: manichini, cristalli, argenti, specchi, pacchetti di patatine schermi di computer. Nei lavori esposti, in bianco e nero e di grande formato, il soggetto e' messo in primo piano, isolato da ogni altro contesto e privato di qualsiasi elemento che lo colleghi alla realta'.

Brancolini Grimaldi è lieta di annunciare la prima mostra personale in Italia dell'artista Valèrie Belin. La mostra include le più recenti opere fotografiche dalle serie "Safes", "Chips" e "Black Women". Valerie Belin fotografa soprattutto oggetti: manichini, cristalli, argenti, specchi, pacchetti di patatine schermi di computer. Ogni motivo dà origine ad una serie che ripete fino ad esaurirsi di ogni possibilità di rappresentazione. Nella serie "Safes","Silver" e "Chips", il soggetto è messo in primo piano, isolato da ogni altro contesto e privato di qualsiasi elemento che lo colleghi alla realtà. L'interesse dell'artista non è tuttavia rivolto all'interminabile lista di oggetti e materiali, ma al modo in cui essi vengono percepiti ed interpretati. Le fotografie tutte di grande formato e in bianco e nero, enfatizzano il carattere dell'immagine.
Nella serie "Black Women", dedicata invece ai ritratti, Valèrie Belin fotografa giovani donne di colore. Un'unica fonte di luce diretta sul volto fa emergere i ritratti dal buio totale dello sfondo, conferendo all'immagine un carattere inespressivo e irreale. Nel 2004 Valèri Belin è stata finalista per il premio Marcel Duchamp e nel 1997 ha vinto il prestigioso premio Paris Photo. Le sue fotografie sono presenti in importanti musei e collezioni internazionali come il Museo d'Arte Moderna di New York, il Museo Nazionale d'Arte Moderna di Parigi, il Centre Georges Pompidou di Parigi e la Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain di Parigi.
La fondazione Huis Marseille di Amsterdam dedicherà una mostra a Valèrie Belin nel settembre 2007cosi come il Musèe de l'Elysèe a Losanna i Svizzera e la Maison Europèenne de la Photographie a Parigi nel 2008.
Valèrie Belin è nata nel 1964 a Boulogne-Billancourt.

Brancolini Grimaldi is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Valérie Belin in Italy, Retrospective in nature, the exhibition contains eight series of her most recent photographs, including “Safes”, “Chips”, and “Black Women”.
Valérie Belin photographs objects including glasses, silver, masks, mirrors, and meat. The seeming randomness of the objects which interest the French photographer are as deceptive as the images themselves.
Belin's photographs are an experiment in ambiguity. They are hyper realistic to the point of disbelief. They are orderly in their chaos. They are objective with underlying intentions. And they are united by the paradoxical concepts which form them, inciting questions about the living, its representation, and everything in between. As curator Régis Durand wrote, “what emerges [in Belin's photographs] is the idea of a double movement: on the one hand, an obsessive search, a desire, as the artist writes, to 'get to the heart of things' and, on the other hand, to make incertitude, latent mutations or metamorphoses at work actually appear while celebrating them.”
The various series included in the exhibition are unified by Belin's signature close-up compositions, with deep blacks and stark whites uniting in high contrast gelatin silver prints. The exhibition also features one series of color photographs, “Black Women”.
In 2004 Belin was shortlisted for the prestigious Marcel Duchamp prize, and in 1997 was awarded the Paris Photo prize. Her photographs can be found in several of the most important international collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Fondation Cartier pour L'Art Contemporain, Paris. Upcoming exhibitions of Belin's work during 2007-2008 include the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, France, and at the Huis Marseille in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Belin's photographs will also be exhibited at several international art fairs including LA Art in New York, Photo London, and Art DC.
