A dynamic installation, paintings and drawings
A dynamic installation, paintings and drawings
24 February - 31 March 2007
Opening reception: 24 February 2007, 6 - 8 PM
Gavin Brown's enterprise is pleased to present new works by New York-based artist Tony Just. His second solo show with Gavin Brown's enterprise, the exhibition is composed as a dynamic installation; paintings and drawings will be mounted bare, without frames, on the wall, and painted sculptures of alternately wood, aluminum and paper will encounter viewers at eye level. The sculptures, miniature replicas of well-known outdoor public art works by Pablo Picasso and Keith Haring, will be painted and graffiti-ed. Like his paintings, they reflect the idioms of urban street culture, such as graffiti tags and mass advertising, whose very meaning emerges from contextualized bricollage.
Just's inspiration for this work stems from the experience of the city and the individual's encounter with a chaotic urban metropolis. With each painting or sculpture Just isolates and transforms the language of the street, and his creations, though taken from deteriorated and gritty sources, emerge as both raw and refined, formalizing form and color to profound effect. He transforms the disposable and fleeting information of the city, like rock concert posters and protest fliers into objects of contemplation and beauty. Graffiti, which Just returns to in this recent work, is itself a significant form which emerges not to eradicate, but to alter and compound meaning. His new works encompass the rich tradition of formal art history, pop culture iconography and contemporary urban culture, presenting the chaotic splendor of the twenty-first century city.
Tony Just, born 1969, lives and works in New York.
