Howard Hodgkin

Dulwich Picture Gallery, London

Howard Hodgkin is one of the most distinguished living artists, with an international reputation. His work vibrates with intense colour, famously spilling out to encompass the frames. Hodgkin speaks the same language as the art of the past in a number of his paintings. This is hinted at by the works' evocative titles - Old Sky, Memories, After the Storm - and often reinforced, as in the case of the latter, by the physical incorporation of an antique picture frame.

Howard Hodgkin is one of the most distinguished living artists, with an international reputation. His work vibrates with intense colour, famously spilling out to encompass the frames.

At first sight, there might seem to be little in common with the collection of old masters at Dulwich Picture Gallery. But Hodgkin pays homage to and ultimately speaks the same language as the art of the past in a number of his paintings.

This is hinted at by the works' evocative titles - Old Sky, Memories, After the Storm - and often reinforced, as in the case of the latter, by the physical incorporation of an antique picture frame.

Dulwich Picture Gallery is delighted to be able to play host to a real dialogue between old and new: nine of Hodgkin's favourite paintings, chosen as being particularly suited to this special series of juxtapositions.

Visitors to Dulwich will be given the rare opportunity of seeing Hodgkin's glowing pieces hanging with the pagan mythologies of Poussin; comparing their intensity with the shimmering skies of Cuyp; squaring up to the eroticism of Lely's slumbering nymphs and the delicacy of Watteau's idyllic fête galante.

We can expect surprises - the old masters are unlikely to be silent partners in this visual dialogue. Whether you love Hodgkin, or the old masters, or both, this juxtaposition can only lead to a greater understanding of how art speaks to us all.
