The Back Side of the Clouds (Works 1971-2007)

The Back Side of the Clouds (Works 1971-2007)

From March 6 to April 14, 2007, the Fabian & Claude Walter Gallery, Zurich, shows a solo exhibition of Swiss artist Hugo Suter (*Aarau, 1943), with works from the 70ies to 2007.

Hugo Suter has been active as an artist for more than 40 years and has shown his work in various exhibitions. Amongst others, his works were shown in important solo exhibitions in the Aargauer Kunsthaus (1982/1997), the Kunsthaus Zurich (1988), the Swiss Institute in New York (1992) and the Kunsthalle Winterthur (1993), as well as in numerous international group exhibitions. In 1976, Suter participated in the Biennale in Venice, and in 1990 he was the Swiss representative at the Biennale in Ankara, where he was honored with the Atatürk Award.

Most recently, Suter's works were shown in an exhibition in the Kunsthaus Aarau, which was dedicated to the studio collective "Ziegelrain" in Aarau, which elevated this small Swiss town to one of the most important centers for contemporary art around 1970. Among artists like Heiner Kielholz, Max Matter, Markus Müller and Christian Rothacher, Hugo Suter worked in this collective, which was not exactly an artists' school, but rather a laboratory for artistic experimentation and mutual inspiration, from 1968 to 1974. With the setup of his studio at the Ziegelrain, Hugo Suter more or less abandoned oil painting, which had been his favorite technique up to that date. Henceforth he worked in diverse media and with various materials, creating works which, for all their diversity, sum up to an ensemble of impressive constancy and congruency.

One of the recurring themes in Suter's work are the mechanisms of vision and perception. The question of reality and image, of truth and illusion, is present in all the works shown at the Fabian & Claude Walter Gallery. With works such as the "Hauchbilder" (breath paintings), which the artist has been producing since the 80ies, and the recent assemblages behind matted glass panels, entitled "Malerei" (painting), the artist has consistently found new media for artistic variations on the theme. This establishes him has a precursor of recent contemporary art, in which the subject of perception and cognition is a central topic. Young artists such as Danish Olafur Eliasson or German photographer Sonja Braas, whose work will be shown in the next solo exhibition staged at the Fabian & Claude Walter Gallery, have focused their artistic work on the exploration of human perception.

Since 1972, Hugo Suter lives at the "Hallwylersee", a lake in his native Canton of Aargau. Since then, the contemplation, observation and exploration of the lake has continuously influenced his work. The water surface, which constantly changes due to alterations in wind and light conditions, has been of particular interest to the artist. The play of light, shadow and ever-changing colors has inspired many of his works, such as the "Hommage à F. A. Forel" (1992), shown at the Fabian & Claude Walter Gallery.

As various as the appearances of the lake are also the many references in Suter's work: ideas from natural sciences, philosophy, psychology and art history find their way into convincing artistic expressions. This complexity of his work may be at least partly responsible for the huge esteem Suter is held in by curators, collectors and fellow artists. Nevertheless, his art is to be appreciated intuitively, as it captivates the beholder with its fascinating esthetics and subtle poetry.
