Amy Steiner photographs
Dodi Wexler paper constructions
Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Amy Steiner and
Dodi Wexler.
In her photographs, Amy Steiner seeks to capture "moments we see and yet miss all the
time", most often through portraiture. Set in varied urban, suburban and rural environments,
her photos explore tensions between urban constructions and natural formations, as well as
issues of consumption related specifically to imagery of women.
Her most recent body of photos, relaxed images of women outdoors in the spring and
summertime, is complicated by an additional element, artificial light. Commercially, lit
photographs (in the form of light boxes) have been used to depict an enhanced reality, an
extra-vibrant, ostensibly more desirable product available for purchase. In choosing this
medium to present her photos, Steiner questions both her own practice and the larger social
implications of a culture in which images of women are so readily available for viewing,
selecting, consuming, possessing.
Amy Steiner's work was included most recently in "The Choice ‘99" at Exit Art. She lives and
works in New York.
Dodi Wexler's paper constructions reveal the limitlessness of paper, incorporating diverse
materials--photographs, thread, natural and found materials--in processes which fragment
and reassemble personal and shared histories.
Her works explore spaces, particularly the space existing ‘between’ forms; they transfer
environments, joining remnants of places visited, people known or unknown, in a present
possessing a multiplicity of origins and referents. When installed, Wexler’s constructions
actively engage the space about them, shifting in scale from intimate to expansive and
continuing her interest in spatial relationships and configurations.
Dodi Wexler completed two residencies in 1999, at the Ragdale Foundation and Yaddo; her
work was most recently included in "Drawings" at Nicole Klagsbrun. She lives and works in
New York and London.
