About the Ego. The subject material of these works deals with the presentation of the human figure and its attitude towards the world as perceived by the artist. The results of these works show stylistic elements reminiscent of surrealism handed down by the Belgian school.
About the Ego
Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven will present her work at two different venues in Berlin at
the same time: in the daadgalerie and at her gallery, Barbara Thumm. In the
daadgalerie there will be mostly sketches and other works on paper such as collages
that were created in her time as a participant in the Berlin Artists-in-Residence
programme.
This time in Berlin was, however, a time of re-orientation, manifesting
itself in unusual pictorial compositions and an experimental approach to materials.
The subject material of these works deals with the presentation of the human figure
and its attitude towards the world as perceived by the artist. The results of these
works show stylistic elements reminiscent of surrealism handed down by the Belgian
school, at the same time they point to works from music, punk music, a scene in
which Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven played an active role in Antwerp. It was within this
framework that she shot her early films, which will now be shown for the first time
in co-operation with Arsenal cinema.
